He’s headlined some of the world’s biggest stages as the lead singer of sixties mod pioneers The Who.
But while Roger Daltrey commanded a comparatively modest audience on Saturday evening, his fee was equal to the enormous sums earned during his touring heyday with the iconic band.
The 74-year old reportedly pocketed $1 million (£713,200) for a performance at a 60th birthday party in California, where he performed some of The Who’s best known tracks – albeit without last surviving bandmate Pete Townshend.TMZ claim the party was held in honour of pain medicine specialist Dr. Craig Flashner MD at his sprawling home in Westlake Village, an hour’s drive outside Los Angeles.
The extravagant party, which also featured performers from hugely popular circus Cirque du Soleil and a troupe of fire eaters, reportedly cost the practitioner $1.5 million – with the bulk of his outlay going to Daltrey. Flashner, who is understood to own more than 500 nursing homes across the United States, later posed for a snap with the legendary singer, published exclusively by TMZ. The performance comes after Daltrey admitted he was hard of hearing after years of performing, and now relies on lip-reading and in-ear monitors to follow the music at live concerts.
Speaking to fans during a gig at the Hard Rock Resort in Las Vegas, he said: ‘The trouble with these ear things that I wear is that I am very, very deaf.
‘And I advise you all – all you rock-and-roll fans – take your f***ing ear plugs to the gigs. Those people aren’t here any more… what am I doing here?
‘And these days everybody thinks that they have thousands and millions of friends on this anti-social media.
‘But in the end as you get older, your friends do die and there is nothing you can do about it. Your real friends are … the ones by your side.’
Daltrey has also claimed that The Who bandmate Pete Townshend also ‘wears two hearing aids’.
